Having recently visited Lānaʻi Airport, I wanted to share my experience with you along with what to expect. This tiny, charming airport perfectly captures the essence of the island it serves. If you have never been relaxed and “chill” at an airport then you are in for a treat.

A Little History About Lānaʻi Airport
Flying into Lānaʻi felt like stepping back in time. Air service began here as an emergency dirt runway in 1919, eventually becoming a formal landing field by 1930, thanks to cooperation with the Hawaiian Pineapple Company.
Back then, flights were provided by Inter-Island Airways—now Hawaiian Airlines—using Sikorsky S-38 amphibious aircraft.

Airlines Flying Here
There are two commercial airlines currently operating at Lānaʻi Airport:
Mokulele Airlines, with regular flights from Oʻahu and Maui.
Lānaʻi Air, providing charter flights mostly from Oʻahu.
Since there aren’t direct flights from the mainland, you’ll connect via neighboring islands, which helps maintain the island’s quiet vibe.

Airport Layout and My Experience
When my flight landed, I stepped right onto the tarmac and walked alongside the ground crew toward the small terminal—no jet bridges here. Inside, the seating area was simple, quiet, and comfortable. All four gates were easily visible from my seat.
There’s a small baggage claim area near the exit, and I noticed a vending machine and some artwork displayed nearby. I didn’t have checked luggage, so I moved quickly through this space.
Checking In for Departure
Checking in at Lānaʻi Airport was straightforward. Walking through the sliding doors on the right side of the main terminal, I quickly found the check-in counters for Mokulele Airlines and Lānaʻi Air. Security checks were smooth, fitting nicely with the overall relaxed atmosphere.
Getting Around and Renting a Car
Ground transportation is limited here, which fits the peaceful nature of Lānaʻi. There’s a car rental agency at the airport, though it’s probably a good idea to book ahead of time due to limited availability. Parking at the airport is free, and I found spaces easily right in front and on the sides of the terminal.

Traveling with Pets
If you plan on bringing your pet along, it’s essential to know Hawai‘i’s strict animal quarantine rules. Lānaʻi Airport does accommodate pets, but it helps to plan ahead. More information is available on the official pet travel page.
