After reviewing hotels across Oʻahu for years, I’ve visited nearly every major luxury property on the island. Some deliver a true five-star resort experience, while others rely more on their location than the overall hotel itself.

Imagine glowing orange sunsets cascading over the water, a drink in hand, and soothing ukulele music playing in the distance, all while you sit from the balcony of your hotel room.

Located on the idyllic Waikiki Beach, this historic Honolulu hotel is like visiting Heaven on Earth. My favorite thing about this hotel is the way the gardens buffer you from the hustle and bustle in Waikiki and yet you are steps away from all the action.

Built in 1927, the Royal Hawaiian Hotel was one of the first to bring in a new era of luxury resorts on Oahu. Its soft pink exterior walls are a warm symbol of splendor. The Kahala Hotel & Resort

Visiting the Kahala is like stepping into a timeless oasis of luxuriousness. They pride themselves on being the hotel of choice for several famous visitors–and for good reason! The Kahala offers exclusive vacation packages with full scenic views of the ocean and a dolphin lagoon. Their famed restaurant Hoku’s at the Kahala has even been prized as the Ilima Awards Critic’s Choice for Honolulu’s best restaurant.

I really like the location of this hotel, minutes from Waikiki and downtown Honolulu and yet secluded in the quiet Kahala neighborhood. If you come to O’ahu for the Sony Open, book this luxury hotel early. Hate paying a resort fee? No resort fee at the Kahala.

Halekulani Hotel (My Top Pick For Best Luxury Hotel On Oahu in Waikiki)

La Mer made my list of the best restaurants in Hawai’i and will probably never be knocked off. The hotel is also stocked with bakery delights from the Halekulani Bakery that is next door at the sister property, the Halepuna Waikiki.

Four Seasons Ko Olina comes from a brand that is trusted and recognized the world over. This beachfront hotel sits on Oahu’s rugged western coast, bringing the island’s natural environment together with a perfect balance of tranquility and elegance. With plenty of opportunities for fun and relaxation, the Ko Olina area is a hotspot for guests seeking their luxury Oahu vacation. 

One of the things that you expect at a luxury hotel is the attention to detail. During my stay here when I was out and about, the staff came in to take care of the cleaning. When I returned my phone cords were neatly wrapped with a Four Season branded tie, my wine glasses were covered with paper shells, and my reading glasses were polished with the cloth left for me to take. Exceptional.

If lounging on private lanais (balconies) with an almost private beach is at the top of your list I encourage you to consider this location. If you are more into swimming pools then the adults only infinity pool will be an absolute delight.

Spend the day lounging on white-sand beaches, or unleash your spirit by rowing an outrigger canoe through turquoise waters. Of all the luxury hotels I have stayed at on O’ahu the Ritz Carlton Waikiki had the most modern amenities in the room. I think because this is also a residence location it really made the room memorable and luxurious.

Located on the island’s famous North Shore, this resort sits on a dramatic peninsula surrounded by more than 1,300 acres of coastline, beaches, and protected natural landscape. While most luxury hotels on Oʻahu are concentrated in Honolulu, Turtle Bay delivers a completely different experience—quiet, scenic, and deeply connected to the island’s rugged side.

I’ve visited the property several times over the years, including before it became a Ritz-Carlton. The recent transition to the Ritz-Carlton brand brought meaningful upgrades across the resort. Rooms were redesigned, public spaces refreshed, and service elevated to match the brand’s luxury standards.

One of the standout features of the resort is the layout of the main building, which sits right on the edge of the peninsula. Because of this design, nearly every room offers sweeping direct ocean views, something that even many five-star Waikīkī hotels can’t consistently match.

But the biggest difference between Turtle Bay and Honolulu’s luxury properties is the setting and activities.

Instead of city energy, the resort is surrounded by nature. Guests can spend their time hiking coastal trails, horseback riding along the shoreline, surfing nearby breaks, golfing on two championship courses, or simply relaxing by one of the oceanfront pools.

For travelers deciding between Waikīkī luxury hotels and a North Shore resort, Turtle Bay offers a completely different type of stay. It’s quieter, more spacious, and one of the best ways to experience the natural side of Oʻahu without giving up five-star comfort.

Clearly the best part of my work is staying at these amazing luxury hotels on O’ahu and reviewing them for you. I have stayed at several on Maui and the Big Island as well giving me a unique perspective on what is available in Hawai’i. One other hotel that is worth mentioning but I just don’t think is a luxury hotel is the Moana Surfrider, the first lady of Waikiki.
