The transformation of The Ambassador Hotel in Waikiki has been years in the making, and I’ve had a front-row seat to its evolution. Long before the Hilton name became part of the story, the property had already begun redefining itself with a bold, locally inspired rebranding initially as the Romer Waikiki at the Ambassador.

In a previous piece I wrote I explored how the Romer concept brought fresh energy to the aging hotel, focusing on neighborhood connection, independent spirit, and a uniquely Hawaiian hospitality approach. If you’re curious about that chapter of the hotel’s journey, you can read more in my article: The Romer Waikiki at the Ambassador: A New Chapter in an Iconic Legacy.

That early transformation laid the groundwork for what has now become an even more significant milestone: The Ambassador Hotel’s inclusion in Hilton’s Tapestry Collection, marking the brand’s debut in Hawai‘i. Watching this property evolve—from its roots as a mid-century mainstay to a community-centric Romer, and now to a globally recognized boutique collection—has been a testament to the resilience and relevance of Waikiki’s hospitality legacy.

With its official reintroduction as part of the Tapestry Collection by Hilton, The Ambassador Hotel Waikiki has taken on a new identity that blends boutique charm with big-brand confidence. This milestone marks Hilton’s first Tapestry Collection property in Hawai‘i, adding a fresh, design-forward option to the heart of Waikiki’s hotel scene.

As reported by Hotel Management, the property now stands among over 115 Tapestry Collection hotels worldwide—each selected for their unique stories and independent spirit. For Hilton, the goal is clear: to offer travelers a more authentic experience while maintaining the reliability and rewards of a global brand.

The Ambassador’s makeover emphasizes its connection to place. Guests can expect tropical mid-century modern design, a custom lava rock wall in the lobby, and rooms that cater to modern travel styles—including two-bedroom suites and rare lofted bunk bed setups. The hotel’s vintage soul is preserved while delivering elevated comfort and updated amenities.

The debut was also highlighted by Hospitality Net, which notes the addition of the Waikiki Swim & Social Club, Beach Candy Waikiki rental access, and Favorite Son—an indoor-outdoor restaurant that leans into local flavors. As part of Hilton Honors, the property is offering special promotions including bonus points for multi-night stays and discounts for Hawai‘i residents.

A Look Back: Exclusive Photos from the Ambassador Hotel’s Renovation Phase

Before The Ambassador Hotel became part of Hilton’s Tapestry Collection, I had the chance to photograph the property during its earlier renovation—back when it was transitioning into the Romer Waikiki concept. While no major physical updates were made during the recent brand shift to Hilton, that initial renovation brought the building into a new era of design, comfort, and guest experience.

These photos were taken during that transformation phase and reflect the refreshed look that still defines the hotel today:

Updated Guest Rooms: Modern furnishings, local design elements, and a layout that honors the hotel’s mid-century roots.

Pool Seating at the Waikiki Swim & Social Club: Freshly styled loungers and retro-inspired cabanas gave the pool area a new social energy.

While I haven’t yet had the opportunity to stay under the new Hilton Tapestry branding, I hope to return soon for a full review and updated experience. Until then, these images offer a snapshot of a pivotal moment in the property’s evolution—and a reminder of how thoughtful renovations can preserve legacy while creating space for new beginnings.

A Historic Icon Reimagined: The Legacy of The Ambassador Hotel

Long before its affiliation with Hilton or its Romer rebrand, The Ambassador Hotel was already a recognizable fixture in Waikiki. Opening its doors in the 1960s, the hotel served generations of visitors drawn to O‘ahu’s sun-soaked shores. With its spacious layout, open-air lanai design, and proximity to both the beach and city life, it captured the essence of mid-century Waikiki—laid-back, accessible, and full of possibility.

While the decades brought changes to the hospitality landscape, The Ambassador retained its nostalgic appeal for return guests and budget-conscious travelers. Yet as Waikiki evolved—with new boutique concepts and luxury towers crowding the skyline—the hotel’s charm began to feel more dated than timeless.

The recent transformation has breathed new life into that legacy. The property’s architectural bones remain intact, but thoughtful design updates have restored its original character with modern relevance. The Tapestry Collection integration doesn’t erase the hotel’s history—it elevates it, emphasizing elements like the lava rock wall in the lobby, lush landscaping, and playful nods to its 1960s roots.

    • Great question, it does not show under the Resort Collection, just under the Tapestry Collection as intended. These hotels are known for their distinct designs and food and beverage experiences that reflect the local area. You can earn and redeem points through the Hilton Honors program.
